Thunder Queens Netball Team coach Mary Waya and three players—Joana Kachilika, Martha Dambo and Sheraz Kaiche—have been loaned to a Tanzanian team, Uhamiaji Sports Club.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) president Rosy Chinunda confirmed that Waya, who is also the national netball team Queens coach, and her three players, joined the club last week.

“I can confirm that the coach and the three players were cleared to join the Tanzanian team on a short-term loan.

“I am not aware of the specific agreement as regards terms, but suffice to say the two teams have a special working relationship. As for the details, maybe, the Thunder Queens coach herself can shed more light,” said Chinunda.

But the NAM president said the coach and the players’ move will not affect the national team and their club as there are no major activities anytime soon.

“It is just a short-term loan deal. We expect them back soon, even before the Airtel National Netball Tournament reaches the national stages. We feel it is a good move as the players stand to gain in terms of international exposure,” she said.

Kachilika and Dambo also play for the national team.

Thunder Queens spokesperson, Christina Nkwanda, confirmed the development, but said she was not aware of the details of the agreement.

“By the way, where have you obtained the information from? I am not aware of the details. You need to get in touch with the coach herself [Waya],” she said.

Waya could not be reached for comment, but Kachilika confirmed that they are indeed playing for the Tanzanian club which is sponsored by the Tanzanian Department of Immigration.

In one picture posted on her Facebook account, Kachilika is seen standing in front of her Tanzanian club’s team bus.
